You Can Help Students Succeed on GivingTuesday

Today, we come together to celebrate the largest 24-hour movement of generosity and good will in the world. Join us in this act of kindness by helping the University of Winnipeg provide an accessible post-secondary education for all students by supporting the University of Winnipeg Tuition Waiver Fund, the Collegiate Model School, or another fund that is meaningful to you. All donations made today are eligible for a tax receipt!

Ongoing and one-time gifts can be made online, by returning a pledge form, emailing Annual Giving Officer Elena Anciro at development.uwf@uwinnipeg.ca, or by calling the University of Winnipeg Foundation at (204) 789 1440. A gift of any size will help by allowing people to improve their lives and for that, we are extremely grateful.

Established in 2012 by UWinnipeg in collaboration with Child and Family Services and the Province of Manitoba, the youth-in-care tuition waiver initiative aims to break down educational barriers for young adults transitioning out of foster care. Your ongoing or one-time gift to the University of Winnipeg Tuition Waiver Fund will help us fully fund undergraduate tuition fees for current or former youth-in-care in Manitoba who have financial need.

Tuition waivers were pioneered at UWinnipeg, prompting other universities and colleges in Manitoba and across Canada to join and replicate this life changing initiative. UWinnipeg is the largest tuition waiver sponsor in Manitoba with 30 students supported each year and highlights the University’s dedication to making education accessible for all.

“I wouldn’t have lasted past the first year if I hadn’t been accepted to the tuition waiver program. I also felt a lot of uncertainty with my abilities. I hadn’t been in school for a while, and I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to maintain sufficient grades due to my disability. However, the gift of being supported through school was enough to boost my morale and encourage me to give it my all. I currently have a GPA of 3.88, which I know is due to the passion for learning I have acquired at university.”

The Collegiate Model School

Collegiate students in Leatherdale hall

The Collegiate Model School enrolls youth, from backgrounds that are under-represented in post-secondary education, who demonstrate potential, yet face barriers to success in mainstream schools. The majority of these young people enter the Grade 9-12 program at the Model School through referrals from inner-city schools, social agencies and community organizations. Over 95% of students are First Nation, Metis, or new Canadians. Your ongoing or one-time gift will help us fully fund tuition fees for Model School students, as well as financial support for transportation, nutrition, and study supplies.

The Model School is embedded in the University of Winnipeg's Collegiate, a private preparatory school with a rigorous academic focus and an enriched arts and sports program. This unique setting allows the Model School to marry high expectations and a stimulating learning environment with creative wrap-around supports, and the extensive infrastructure and services of a large university, to give equity deserving youth a chance to achieve academic success. Students can also choose to take dual-credit courses, which allows them to integrate into the university community in Grade 12. All Model School students are enrolled in the University's Opportunity Fund Tuition Credit Account program, where they can earn up to $3,000 in tuition credit to attend the University of Winnipeg upon graduation.

“The Model School is an amazing program that gives kids opportunities that most public schools won't have. One major opportunity that I feel benefits students attending the Model School are the connections to the University of Winnipeg, which gives kids a better chance to attend university after high school. In the future, I want to become a veterinarian and while attending my previous schools I would have doubt in achieving my dream job because I felt they wouldn't push us to succeed. Ever since I started attending the Model School, I have grown to be more confident in reaching my goals for the future. The teachers also give us a bunch of support and push us to succeed. The Model School also provides food for kids if they don't have a lunch and gives us bus passes that get refilled so we can get home after school. This program doesn't only provide amazing teachers and education but it also gives kids the confidence to work hard and achieve their goals.”

On behalf of our students, thank you for choosing UWinnipeg on Giving Tuesday!
