THE CAROL SHIELDS WRITERS-IN-RESIDENCE
The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence is an incredible source of influence and inspiration for local up-and-coming writers. The Program annually selects an emerging Canadian writer to hold office in the English Department at The University of Winnipeg and provides the author with office space and travel expenses as well as a wage, enabling the Resident to work on her own projects while also meeting with community members and University students to read and advise on a variety of written work by email or appointment.
Past writers have reviewed and assisted with as many as 70 individual works during their time at UWinnipeg. Residents also hold public readings and lectures.
Being chosen for the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence is a prestigious opportunity for a writer as she gets to join the ranks of past Residents such as: Margaret Sweatman, Sandra Birdsell, John Weier, Maria Campbell, David Bergen, Ivan Coyote, Debbie Patterson, Gregory Scofield, Chandra Mayor, Jennifer Still, and Rick Chafe.
A prominent figure at The University of Winnipeg, first as a Writer-In-Residence (1988) and Chancellor (1996-2000), this program was made possible through a $100,000 gift from the Shields family in 2005, which has been managed and wisely spent over the twelve years the program has been in operation. It has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and receives ongoing generous support from Friends of the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence.
The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program can cost as much as $20,000 per year to run and we are calling on YOU to help continue Carol’s legacy and this unique, invaluable resource that has touched so many within the literary community. Join the prestigious list of supporters, including Margaret Atwood, J. Roger Lévéille and Charlotte Gray.
