About This Project:
Help support Métis students at The University of Winnipeg and The Manitoba Metis Federation will MATCH your donation 2 to 1 up to $30,000.
The University of Winnipeg is committed to offering a variety of Indigenous focus programs, research, scholarship opportunities and accessibility to a post-secondary institution. Approximately 13% of incoming students at the University of Winnipeg self-identify as Indigenous, and half of those students are Métis, which is among the highest rates across Canada.
Since 1999, the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) and its education arm, the Louis Riel Institute, have issued bursaries to Manitoba Métis students attending participating universities.
At The University of Winnipeg, Louis Riel Bursaries are awarded to full-time entering or returning Métis students with financial need. The bursaries are a vital tool for increasing access to higher education and qualifying students can receive up to $2,500. The bursaries have been a tremendous success, with more than 70 students benefiting last year alone. We need your help to build on that success!
"The Louis Riel Bursary is important because it lightens the load for students. I often see Métis students who need help. They're working two part-time jobs to put food on the table, pay their rent - never mind cover the costs of tuition. So this does lighten the load, which results in better grades, better outcomes, and brighter futures."
- Rev. Tanis McLeod Kolisnyk, Academic Advisor at The University of Winnipeg and member of the Board of Directors at the Louis Riel Institute.

SUPPORTING RESEARCH AND STUDENTS
On January 31, 2018, The University of Winnipeg and the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that brings an additional $600,000 to campus to support Métis scholarship at UWinnipeg over the next decade.
Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg and David Chartrand, President, MMF, say the new initiative builds on a strong history of collaboration and creates new academic opportunities for Métis faculty, researchers and students.
The first phase will see a post-doctoral researcher at UWinnipeg collect and analyze data to paint a picture of how Métis people in rural and urban Manitoba are faring in terms of health, economic and educational outcomes.
