Launch a Human Rights Speakers Bureau

Winnipeg has a vast array of knowledgeable quality speakers, and we want to showcase this immense talent as well as facilitate access to them. The Human Rights Hub and MARL have joined forces to launch a Human Rights Speakers Bureau for just this purpose.

How many human rights-related events do you think have taken place in the last 9 months in Winnipeg?

50? 100? Not even close.

Would you believe there were over 739 human rights-related events on the Human Rights Hub Winnipeg calendar that took place in Winnipeg between October 2015 and June 2016? That’s approximately 82 events a month, or nearly 3 events each day!

Over the last several years, Winnipeg has seen a significant increase in public awareness and interest about human rights issues. Winnipeg, with the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights dominating the skyline, has been internationally recognized as a Canadian centre for human rights.

Winnipeg’s human rights connection is not only clear in its infrastructure, but more importantly, in its community. Winnipeggers are joining together and forming groups, planning events, circulating petitions and taking other notable actions to stand together toward a more just future.

The Human Rights Hub Winnipeg and the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties (MARL) are two local organizations that are delighted by the level of engagement in our community. We have noticed, however, a twofold dilemma:

  • A small group of impassioned individuals are called upon to donate their time and efforts towards speaking at or hosting an event.
  • Many people want to take action and plan an event, but are unsure how to reach out to an impassioned speaker for their event

Winnipeg has a vast array of knowledgeable quality speakers, and we want to showcase this immense talent as well as facilitate access to them. The Human Rights Hub and MARL have joined forces to launch a Human Rights Speakers Bureau for just this purpose.

We want to create a website that will facilitate the connection between speakers and those who want to hear their stories, and allow schools, organizations, churches and businesses to search for a speaker by name or topic. All of our speakers will be able to choose for themselves whether they’d like to volunteer their time, receive an honorarium or charge a nominal fee.

We are raising money to cover the costs of building and maintaining this site, as well as purchasing online advertisements to promote the site.

If you believe in helping spread the knowledge and stories of inspiration of our local human rights speakers, please support the Human Rights Speakers Bureau. Your gift, be it $2 or $2,000, will go a long way in making this vision a reality. Thank you for your kind consideration and please remember to share this page with your family and friends. All gifts will receive a charitable tax receipt.

If you don’t want to make a gift online, you can also send a cheque to:

The University of Winnipeg Foundation
901 - 491 Portage Avenue
Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 2E4 Canada

*Note: Please make sure to mark your cheque for the "Speakers Bureau" and your gift will be counted towards this important initiative!
