About This Project:

The Jim Silver Award was created by Winnipeg businessman and philanthropist Michael Nesbitt in honour of the recently retired UWinnipeg professor, Dr. Jim Silver. Mr. Nesbitt admires the humanitarian efforts Dr. Silver has made over the years on behalf of Winnipeg’s most impoverished and vulnerable, most notably Dr. Silver’s work in bringing Merchants Corner to Winnipeg’s North End neighbourhood. This generous award will support students enrolled in the Department of Urban & Inner-City Studies. The recipient selection will be based on financial need, academic merit, and community involvement.

A scholar and professor for over 35 years, Dr. Jim Silver has been actively engaged in anti-poverty efforts in Winnipeg’s inner city for decades. Dr. Silver focuses particularly on the urban Indigenous experience and has identified a variety of creative and effective urban Indigenous community development initiatives, as well as other anti-poverty initiatives that have been successful in Winnipeg’s inner city.

The Jim Silver Award is a wonderful tribute to the work Dr. Silver has and continues to produce in these communities and will provide support to a future generation of like-minded individuals.

About Merchants Corner:

Merchants Corner is an exceptionally exciting collaboration between The University of Winnipeg’s Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies and CEDA-Pathways to Education. A vibrant hub of positive community activity, the centre is educational and cultural in character and is consistent with the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report.

The facility hosts thirty units of student housing to support the housing needs of students and their families. This project has had a transformative and powerful impact in Winnipeg’s North End neighbourhood.
