Wesmen Athlete Shares Her Story Changing lives: Student Stories

Fourth-year Criminal Justice major (Hons.) and Wesmen athlete Grace Vallis has been a central fixture of the Women’s Volleyball frontline for the better part of the last 3 years. Named to the Canada West all-rookie team during her freshman season in 2023, this veteran of 36 matches and skilled middle blocker will be looking to help lead her team to victory in their upcoming match against MacEwan University after the winter holiday break.
Off the court, Vallis notes how much she appreciates her fellow undergraduates and the support she has received since coming to UWinnipeg. “I really enjoy the different communities at the University,” says Vallis. “Not only do I have my teammates, but I have lots of opportunities to connect with other people on campus as part of the Ukrainian Club, and as a member of the Criminal Justice Students’ Association.”
As a recipient of the Wesmen Athletic Scholarship, Vallis notes how important awards are in the lives of students who play for any UWinnipeg team. “These funds that go towards our tuition as student athletes are really important as they allow us to dedicate more time towards improving our skills during the summer off-season–which is extremely helpful.” says Vallis. “It is thanks to these scholarships that I have been able to pursue opportunities outside of sport in addition to rehabbing injuries and working part-time during the school year because I haven’t had to worry about those extra costs.”
“To the donors who help make these athletic scholarships possible, I want to thank you for supporting student athletes and believing in our successes.” says Vallis.
