On Wednesday, May 14, representatives from the University of Winnipeg (UWinnipeg) and University of Winnipeg Foundation (UWF) joined event host Jennifer Roblin, a UWinnipeg alumna, and longtime UWF volunteer and donor, at her Toronto home for the 11th Annual Tea for Wii Chii event that raised more than $28,000.
This annual event was attended by more than 37 guests who came to celebrate and support the Wii Chiiwaakanak Centre Learning Centre (Wii Chii). The primary focus of the Centre is to provide free educational and cultural programming rooted in Indigenous knowledge to develop and strengthen pathways for Indigenous students to attend post-secondary education.
Guests enjoyed catering by Jennifer’s good friend Liza Hardoon from To Go Catering, and learned more about the work and community outreach the Centre provides from special guest, Dr. Todd Mondor, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Winnipeg, and Angeline Nelson, Director, Community Learning and Engagement, who oversees Wii Chii.
Javier Schwersensky, President and CEO, UWF was in the crowd at the event and thought the excitement and energy in the room was wonderful.
“It was great to see how engaged the guests were in what Angeline was saying,” said Schwersensky. “Many asked questions about the types of programming Wii Chii offers to the community and how that is positively impacting inner city youth.”
The annual Tea for Wii Chii event helps raise funds for the Centre’s integral work with underserved communities and during the past 10 years, the event has raised more than $324,000.
